Classic Compact manufacturer description
Classic Compact 3.0.9 is designed for those who want a very compact theme that minimizes vertical space consumed by menu, tool, tab, find and status bars and maximizes the space available for the browser window. This theme is one of the most compact themes available for Firefox and is compatible with Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and other OSes.
Classic Compact Themes OPTIONS (for Firefox 3.0)
To unlock the full potential of Classic Compact's optional settings (including Firefox 2.0 toolbar buttons, the new keyhole arrows, OS native scrollbars, support for dark OS background colors and more), install the companion extension "Classic Compact download Options" at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6969
USERS MIGRATING FROM CLASSIC COMPACT 2.0 TO 3.0 PLEASE NOTE
The default look of Classic Compact has in some respects radically changed between versions 2.0 and 3.0. The changes were based on feedback that I received from users during the four months I was developing Classic Compact 3.0 before Firefox 3.0 was released and the need to accommodate changes in Firefox 3.0. The overwhelming desire expressed by users was to have a theme that was as absolutely compact as possible without harming usability. Making Classic Compact as compact as possible without making it look crunched together or cluttered required that I deviate substantially from the default Firefox theme.
It is not possible to make this theme be all things to all people; however, I tried to accommodate as many design requests as I could by developing the optional extension "Classic Compact Options". This optional extension installs an options panel which allows users to customize the look of Classic Compact. The reason the options panel is an optional install instead of being built into Classic Compact is that it was not technically possible to build it into the theme itself due to limitations that are placed on what themes can do.
WHY THE NON-NATIVE SCROLLBARS
Users will notice that Classic Compact 3.0 uses custom scrollbars. The use of custom scrollbars became necessary due to changes in Firefox 3.0 which exposed different OS native scrollbar related bugs in Mac and Windows versions of Firefox making it impossible for these two versions of Firefox to use the same scrollbar instructions to get OS native scrollbars (please see: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423780). Using the optional extension "Classic Compact Options", does have an option for OS native scrollbars as extensions are able to do things that themes can not do, which allowed me to work around the scrollbar bugs.
HOW TO GET UNIFIED KEYHOLE BUTTONS (Firefox 3.0 only)
To turn on the new unified keyhole buttons use the new companion extension "Classic Compact Options", which is at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6969
SAVE MORE SPACE BY USING SMALL ICONS
To use small icons, right mouse click on menu bar and select "customize" or go to "View": "Toolbars": "Customize" then check the "use small icons" option.
SUPPORTS WINDOWS, MAC OSX, LINUX AND OTHER OSES
Classic Compact fully supports Mac OS in addition to Windows and Linux. This makes Classic Compact an ideal theme for those who work on multiple OSes and would like Firefox to have a nearly identical look and feel across all platforms.
FIREFOX 2.0 USERS PLEASE NOTE
Firefox 2, users should install Classic Compact v2.0.2 (click on the "older version" link below the grayed out "Add to Firefox" button).
If you have problems with Classic Compact or Classic Compact Options working correctly (e.g. tabs not displaying properly, etc.) please try disabling your other extensions to find out if they are not playing nicely with Classic Compact. There are some known issues with Tab Mix Plus not always playing nice with Classic Compact and I am working on resolving these issues as I'm made aware of them. There are, however, hundreds of different option combinations between Tab Mix Plus and Classic Compact Options, so it is impossible for me to foresee all potential conflicts. If you do find an issue with Classic Compact that is being caused by another extension please tell me the extension that is causing the problem, what settings cause the problem and what the nature of the problem is. I can be contacted via the Classic Compact home page or support pages.
